John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Many of us have recently set our New Year’s Resolutions and/or goals for 2013. We were excited for the new start and the freshness of a brand new year. Whether it’s daily exercise, daily prayer, daily bible reading, eating better, even letting go of an addiction or simply not yelling at the kids today, it’s a battle over our own flesh. Unfortunately, many of us may have already fallen short of some of those goals. Personally, I have not done all that I had planned to and it’s only a few weeks into the New Year. But thank the Lord for his grace and mercy. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness”. He is faithful even when we are not.
So, don’t be discouraged. Instead, be committed in those areas the Lord has called you to change or to continue in. Confess your sins to God, because he is faithful to forgive. Ask Him to fill you with His spirit so you can overcome temptation and press on, being set free to do His good and perfect will.
In having a relationship with Christ Jesus, we don’t have to be a slave to our old self, our old bad habits, or our old sinful ways. We can have victory in Jesus. As Paul says in Romans 6:11, ”Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” We are made new in Him. Don’t give up. Be obedient to live the life God has called you to. Commit your ways to Him. He has set you free from the bondage of sin and given you hope. Yield to His Holy Spirit daily and watch what He does, how He changes you and how He blesses you. Watch how you are set free in knowing Him.
